Community Development

“Just as a  company seeks to conserve its assets and its future survival by reinvesting part of its profits, so it should seek to conserve and improve the social environment in which it does business, in the hope that it will be able to continue to do business in the future, preferably in a better environment than it has at present.”
Harry Openheimer

The private sector is playing an increasingly vital role in finding solutions for the social, economic and environmental challenges we face on a local and global level.

Community social investment (CSI) is one way in which the private sector is aiding the development of communities across SA.  Private corporations are now seen as corporate citizens who own the responsibility of giving back to the communities and environments they take from.

At Space Age Technologies we regard the challenge not as an obligation but as part of our responsibility to ensuring a better future for our company, community and country as a whole.

Our commitment to creating a sustainable project with both immediate and long term solutions for the challenges that riddle our surrounding communities is an integral part of our philosophy as a company.

As one of our many values here at Space Age Technologies state:  ‘We aim to make a difference by allowing our moral values to guide us in all our action’

Our contribution
Skills development: Space Age Technologies invests in the potential of our country’s youth. On an annual basis we take in learners from previously disadvantaged schools in Stellenbosch. These learners are given an opportunity to learn and grow in a corporate IT environment. Four of these learners went on to become valued employees of Space Age.

Participation in community projects: Klapmuts is one of the poorer communities in the Stellenbosch area. There is only one school that serves all the children in this community. In 2008 Space Age Technologies partnered with a Stellenbosch University project (Project Watergarden) to build a much needed library for the school. It was a greatly fulfilling experiences for us as a company, knowing that we had a made a difference in the education of these children.

Our vision for our CSI project encapsulates a broader more sustainable approach to community development.

  • We strive to make a difference in the education sphere by promoting technology in education i.e. improving the IT infrastructures of  schools in Stellenbosch
  • We intend on improving the basic needs of learners in previously disadvantaged schools in the Stellenbosch area i.e. networking with food distribution programmes
  • We also believe that promoting life orientation programmes that raise drug and HIV/Aids awareness is of vital importance i.e. interlinking previously disadvantaged schools with each other to improve the effects of such campaigns

By networking resources and combining our forces with other organisations with similar ambitions, Space Age Technologies can and will make a sustainable difference in our community.
